Salary Range: $60,000 – $65,000
Position Summary
Manhattan School of Music seeks a full-time cataloger for the new position of Digital Media Librarian. Reporting to the Director of Library Services, the Digital Media Librarian will work alongside the Head Catalog Librarian, a Catalog Librarian, and several paraprofessional staff. The Digital Media Librarian will be responsible for cataloging most of the MSM’s digital media and School recordings, maintaining proxy access to our online subscriptions, and assisting with the expanding features of our catalog. This position will be the Library’s main link to the School’s IT department. It is an on-site job, 9-5 Monday-Friday.

- In conjunction with the Head Catalog Librarian, set the direction and maintain standards for metadata creation for the Library’s digital collections, including audio recordings, video recordings, and electronic theses.
- Organize, store, and create metadata and access points for digital collections, both commercial and archival.
- Collaborate with archival and Library staff on digitization projects: photographs, videos, music manuscripts, etc.
- Work closely with Recording Arts, the Orto Center, and IT.
- Plan and maintain the Library’s web pages, including the Web Opac, using Clarivate/Innovative’s Sierra ILS, Summon, and LibGuides.
- Catalog physical materials, including scores, books, and recordings.
- Assist the Head Catalog Librarian with training and instruction in new technologies and techniques, as well as and with supervision of other paraprofessional library staff.
- Oversee the management of the Library’s A-Z List of Digital Resources, hosted EZProxy authorizations software (LDAP), SAML, and SSO integration.
- Perform reference duties approximately 5 hours per week.
Job Requirements
- Master’s degree in library or information science from an ALA-accredited school, bachelor’s degree in music, or an international equivalent of these degrees.
- Experience with metadata formats and conventions; knowledge of XML; adept with Web-authoring tools and scanning equipment; basic knowledge of computer hardware, printers, and sound and video playback equipment and applications.
- Knowledge of best practices for digital and physical audiovisual preservation and access, including metadata creation and file storage.
- Relevant experience in a music library, including experience with original music cataloging using current standards and systems.
- Familiarity with MARC cataloging for audio and video materials, as well as emerging standards relevant to digital media discovery and description (BibFrame, RDA); experience using LC authority files.
- Understanding of copyright law, especially as it relates to digital reserves.
- Thorough knowledge of music history and repertoire.
